Marshall, is the tribal chairman of Mashpee Wampanoag who is applying to build a Indian resort casino in Massachusetts.

It seems while Marshall did serve in the Marines, there are no records indicating his claims of receiving five Purple Hearts or a Silver Star.

So what is the connection between Marshall and Doolittle?

As one might expect, Doolittle wrote a letter on Marshall’s behalf to then Interior Secretary Gail Norton seeking Federal recognition. What this story did not mention was whether or not the Mashpee was a client of admitted felon Jack Abramoff, a close and trusted associate of Doolittle.

Given both Abramoff and Doolittle’s transgressions, this certainly does not look good.

This certainly cannot help the embattled Congressman, can it?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iFh1zI5eHE8/Rj7NAKsHEdI/AAAAAAAAAEA/ABZe6YeU0OM/s400/051222_brown_hmed_3p.h2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5061708433964077522" />

When the music's over turn off the nights

That was bound be the song playing at the RNC these days. Thanks so much - your telelphone calls with comments, suggestions and just the "you're doing great!" calls mean so much to me and even the few "You're not doing so great" helps me a lot!?

Looking forward to 2007 with KRBS. We're setting up a system where I'll be letting the record labels know when we receive the cds they send to KRBS via email which, hopefully, will generate receiving more cds with such good music that's out there but never gets mentioned. Don't worry - we'll keep the "old" music in our shows always. Also, want to encourage the programmers to send playlists to the labels of the new artists we play. A lot to look forward to!

Thanks again for all your support......
Sue

Willy and Odell

Hi, everyone!
The day before Thanksgiving and believe it or not, we do have quite a bit to be thankful for - we're still here...!
First off I want to get the Micheal Richards "incident" out of the way - for those of you who remember, think Andy Kaufman! A coincidence that Jerry Seinfeld was on the David Letterman show the other night and decided this would be a good place for Richards to "apologize".....Kaufman is very close.....

I'll be at the station (a song title?) on Friday....playing good music. Found Odell Harris on Broke and Hungry Records. Wow, the real deal.....the recording session took one full evening (I think it was from 5:00 pm to 7:00 am) to record. The guitars are not tuned perfectly, but like Broke & Hungry records said, "We were lucky they BROUGHT their guitars!" Some good guitar work, Odell kept walking away from the mic when doing his vocals....at the end of the session, when it came time to do business, Odell, at first, refused his check saying this was NOT the reason he came to the session, he came "just to play"! He did accept the check. The label seems to be handled by good people; they go out to seek the talent and they pay!

Yes, I'll be playing Odell on Friday and I'll be talking about the film, "Me and You and Everyone We Know"...it's quirky of course....about people connecting with each other for various reasons. The acting is superb; actual people! Waiting for "Bobby" and "Dream Girls" to come up to "O"....I think Jamie Foxx & Eddie Murphy will be competing with each other for best actor nod from the Oscars (like, who cares?) and "Bobby" looks terrific; Emilio Estevez directed, wrote and possibly prodouced this film that was built around film clips of Bobby Kennedy up to the night he was assassinated....the cast includes Emelio, Sharon Stone, Lindsay Lohan, Demi Moore, Harry Belafonte, Laurence Fishburne, Anthony Hopkins and on -you'll see - even bit parts went to "stars."

Stay tuned for Friday, back to the oven for the next 24 hrs.
Have a wonderful holiday...be with friends and family if you can.
Hi, Willy - have a wonderful holiday and your music will definitely be played!

Sue

Willy and..."Ay, Caramba!"

Diamonds on my windows! Feels good to bundle up and stay indoors for a while!
On the menu for tomorrow, "Coffee and Cigarettes" of course will feature Mr. Deville - his concerts are doing so well in Europe, there's not much more to say! And "Ay Caramba!" means the Latino film festival opens on Friday (tomorrow the 3rd) in San Francisco. 85 films from 17 countries screening in nine bay area cities over the next couple of weeks (you do the math). Festival founder Sylvia Perel of the "Yes, we can" battle cry heard in immigarant rights marches throuoghout the past year, now says "It's more like 'Si, se pudo'" because we DID do it! The 10th Annual International Latino Film Festival opens at 7:00 pm Friday (the 3rd) at the Castro Theatre with two films and a gala party. The festival continues thru November 19 in 9 bay area cities including San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and San Rafael. For ticket prices & a complete schedule call (415) 454-4039 or www.latinofilmfestival.org Enjoy!

While you're indoors staring out the window wondering what to do; find good movies on TV! Yes, it can happen and usually does. I found "Guilty By Suspicion" released in 1991 starring Robert DeNiro. About the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Excellent...DeNiro is great; some good dialogue riffs which makes me realize Vince Gallo must have grown up on a diet of DeNiro films - you'll see what I mean. I also walked out the door and walked into a theatre to see "The Departed"...Yes, it's all the critics say it is - brilliant performance by Leonardo DeCaprio with Alec Baldwin providing excellent scenes. Martin Scorcese directs as if he's giving a dinner party; attention to every detail including the background music, and the perfect table settings. Jack Nicholson adds the color for the dinner guests, but I kept thinking Mickey Rourke could've added another dimension, another dynamic to the party.
Saving the best for last - if you haven't already seen "Secretary" with Maggie Gyllenhaal, get Netflix on a hot line to order this film. It is brilliant; Gyllenhaal is awesome (she won the Independent Spirit award for best actress in 2002 for this movie) James Spader is perfect, altho he kept reminding me of a blond, bland Robert Downey Jr. (difficult thing to do!), but he was perfectly cast.
This should keep you happy and get you ready for "Coffee and Cigarettes" and "Reel Talking" tomorrow. Enjoy!
Ooooops, "Coffee and Cigarettes"...yes, I'll be playing Willy DeVille, Iya Khan, Markus and our faves.....
Sue

15 Minutes of Fame

With much success from our Back 2 Skool Back 2 Music special, Emobo the Show has decided to open up a 15 minute slot in our show to feature local music. Excellent musicians, they do it all, blues, jazz & Reggae! They do a wonderful rendition on the classic Reggae "Book of Rules"....of course I'll play it on Friday! Can't wait. Hope you listened to last week's show - I thought it sounded good - Dylan gets better and better if possible. "Modern Times" is so good. And more from Willy (DeVille of course). He's performing in Belgium as we speak....and he's so New York. His European fans love him, so I'll keep you posted on the reviews and emails from his fans.

For "Reel Talking"...lots goin' on; Dixie Chicks' new documentary "Shut Up and Sing" is out in limited release on Friday, the 27th. It's looking good and as one reviewer said, "Great companion to 'The US vs. John Lennon'. Yep, the Dixie Chicks, who would've thought? Anyone catch Steven Wright on Comedy Central on TV the other night? Imagine him being your best friend....he must have a few of them. How lucky can they be? Here's a tidbit: "My grandfather was crazy - when he died he left an IOU for his will." "Melvin Goes to Dinner" is an excellent film to get involved in; smart talk and good actors. "Puffy Chair" was reviewed as being hilarious, yadda, yadda....actually it is a mildly amusing film with good actors who generate a lot of interest from their audiences with their performances and their improvisation and some scripted dialogue.

Haven't seen the pop movies yet altho I do want to see "The Departed" big names, so it HAS to be good, right?

Kids, I think this is it until Friday. Stay tuned and don't forget to fall back an hour on Saturday night/Sunday am (2:am to be exact).

Have a great weekend and carve a pumpkin for the Halloween of it.

Sue

Willy and Joan?

Hi, Everyone....
Once again got lost in blog whatever you want to call it.....
However, have to say Friday the 13th show was a fun show and so was Friday! Just after I begged/pleaded with Iya Khan on the air to contact KRBS with a little more information about himself because we all love playing his music, I was handed a large white envelope addressed to me c/o Music Along the Feather......from Iya Khan! Tore it open and he had sent a press release with a lot of good information; he has a band, "Iya Khan and the Would Be Kings" who have been a regular attraction at the "House of Blues" at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas for the last 3 years, he is the son of a musician; his father was a reknown bassist during the "Bop Era"...and his uncle was a drummer for the great Oscar Peterson. He is from Detroit, but no matter he goes, he feels at home. His objective is to "Rock Da House!".....Thank you, Mr. Khan! Also on the same day, the envelope underneath Iya Khan's envelope was from Epitath/Anti records with a cd for KRBS from Sierra Leone's "Refugee All Stars"! They all will be at the Fillmore on Thursday, Novermber 9 in San Francisco. Thanks so much! The cd will definitely get lots of airplay....and one more: Eric Lindell will be at the Great American Music Halll on October 26 and also on October 27 & 28 at the Forestville Club in Forestville, CA at 6250 Front Street. Lindell is receiving lots of airplay, terrific reviews/press, etc. In other words, a BUZZ!

Wow, does this leave any room for movies/TV's "Reel Talking"....all I know is that Christopher Walken is stealing the film, "Man of the Year" from Robin Williams. All I can say is they should've, could've cast Katt Williams to play the Robin Williams role. I don't think they're brothers.....

Once again....."Joan" refers to Joan Osborne.....received her new cd at KRBS, but I'm searching out her earlier cds and think I've found a good one. Her voice is so good, her songs are wonderful, so stay tuned......

And Willy DeVille is doing great - having a blast in Europe ....good for him!

Sue

Willy and Iya Khan

Good Morning!
Rain, rain...feels good - justifies staying at home to "work" on the computer!
Have lots to talk about on "Coffee and Cigarettes" Willy (Deville) is back in Europe playing to sold out shows in Belgium, then on October 22 he's doing a "Highway to the Hills" show....don't know where - info was not in English! And, speaking of good music, KRBS received a cd by Iya Khan....no more info than that, he's good! 13 tracks - all good. I'll be playing his cd (no title) on Friday (tomorrow!). Also Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars album, "Living Like a Refugee produced by Chris Velan was released last week on Anti Records. It reached to #23 on the Amazon.com Top Seller list! And we've been playing the cd for you for a few months right here on KRBS.....wow.

Discovered that television can't keep me awake after 10:00 pm. I'm trying because I enjoy Ray Liotta and his show, "Smith", but after hearing all the news, the analysis, the speculation all interrupted by commercials thru out the evening, then by 10:00 pm I'm not ready for the hipper than hip banter on "Studio 60 Sunset Strip"....slow down you guys, even my best friends can't think that fast! So, Ray Liotta, Jimmy Woods, and Matthew Perry, love you guys, but a little earlier or less commercials, please! Best show is "Ugly Betty" on at 8:00 pm and you still have the energy to laugh out loud.

Tune in tomorrow (Friday) morning to listen to Iya Khan along with Willy, Tom, Markus and a few others!

Sue

Willy and Jesse

Hey,
I won't be here to do my show "Coffee and Cigarettes" on Friday, the 22nd but KRBS' programmer, Jesse, is going to help out - hooray for Jesse!
A few notes while I'm gone: Delta Groove Records sent KRBS a fine blues cd by Jackie Payne with the Steve Edmonson band. Payne sounds like an old bluesman with the band backing him perfectly; those great guitar solos fit the songs.....mighty fine!

Refugee All Stars sent a newsletter regarding upcoming screening of their DVD: "Living Like a Refugee" On September 21, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil at the Rio De Janerio International Film Festival...on September 30 in Camden, Main at the Camden International Film Festival including Q&A with directors.....on October 11- 15 Burlington, Vermont at the Vermont International Film Festival with Q&A with directors....also on October 11- 12 Ghent, Belgium, Flanders International Film Festival, .....and on October 18 at 8:30 pm at the United Nations Association Film Festival in San Francisco...on October 29 in Palo Alto (Closing night film)

For TV: UNluckyLouie.....HBO has pulled the plug on "Lucky Louie"...so sad! TV looks bleak once more. Have to sit and wait patiently for "Entourage" and "The Sopranos" to return.

For Films: Buzz, buzz about Martin Scorsese's "Departed" with Jack (Nicholson), Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg. Hopefully, I will have seen "Black Dahlia" by next Friday when I'll be back and have a few others to talk about.

Have a great weekend, everyone....and thanks again to Jesse for playing the music and talking the talk.

Sue

Willy and Bob Dylan

Have the new cd, "Modern Times" which is so good. Dylan is definitely the poet of our time, before and after. Frail sounding at times which gives even more meaning to everything. I will be playing it tomorrow morning on "Coffee and Cigarettes"....also found a Calypso cd by Maya Angelou! Back in the days of coffee houses, I saw Maya Angelou perform and was she powerful! What an evening - I can still remember it and remember the moment it was decided that my expected baby's name would be Maya - I was sure she was going to be a girl and she was! So, I'll be playing Maya Angelou along with a few other surprises.
I hope my information is correct this week because "Black Dahlia" is scheduled at the Feather River Cinema starting on Friday (15th) at 1:10 pm. Good cast, should be a fascinating film.
I will be talking about "Mind the Gap" which is a very good film; lots of interesting stories with interesting people. "Mind the Gap" is what English people say to each other instead of "goodbye" so pay attention! When you see Ringo, remember to say, "Ringo......mind the gap" He'll be impressed. ?

And favorite, Adrien Grenier has a documentary, "Shot in the Dark" about finding his father. Interesting story - the dialogue goes something like this, "Well, Dad, how do I look?" Dad: "Like a man"....Grenier is one of our more talented actors, he keeps to himself and stays on his own path which makes his work i.e., "Entourage" so interesting. Have to tell you amongst the crew people he credits, "Ari Gold and Eric Lee are listed as the cinematographers.....names sound familiar?

We'll have a good show tomorrow! Be there......
Sue

Willy and Guy Davis

Hey, hey!

Hope everyone had a good holiday and doesn't this week seem shorter? A win, win week.
Read the new issue (Aug.Sept.) of "Dirty Linen" and this magazine is so cool. First of all, a good interview on Willy (DeVille) At first I thought it was kinda prickly - you know, describing what he was wearing, his hair, his "haunted eyes", etc., etc., but when the interview turned to his music, then the magic happened....very good!

Also in this same issue is a cd review of Guy Davis', "Call the Thunder Down". Davis is the son of Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis - how's that for a good pair of genes? Wow. His parents were the coolest; they both were actors, (stage & screen) directors, writers, their friends included Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Harry Belafonte, etc., etc. And Guy Davis' cd is so good. Really gets down with those blues, wonderful lyrics....yes, I'll be playing the cd on Friday on "Coffee and Cigarettes". And, Eric Lindell received a stunning review of his cd, "Change in the Weather"; the reviewer, "MS" said "Give it Time' and 'Two Bit Town' are two of the best blues songs you'll hear this year." These two tracks are beautiful and so is "Feel Like I Do" and "All Alone". In other words, it's a good cd!

Anyone for a disco beat? I thought so, however, there is a track on "Party Essential" on CAPP Records, "Dust in the Wind" that is so good, mixed with Kansas' version and a rapper/hip hop dude! I want to play it for you on Friday - I just hope listeners won't think they've got the wrong station or something wierd is happening at KRBS,but the track is good.....stay tuned!

Okay, TV, withdrawls were tough on Sunday night. No "Entourage" nor "Lucky Louie" but I found one of my favorite series, "The Comeback" with Lisa Kudrow. Wow - good!
I have a list of new movies that are coming out that all sound promising. "Hollywoodland" is opening at Feather River Cinema on Friday. The story of the murder of George Reeves who played Superman.

Stay tuned and thanks for reading if you've gotten this far. Friday will be a good show, I promise.
Thanks again,
Sue

Willy and Dirty Linen*

Hi, Everyone!
Finally got here - I had so much to say but couldn't post a new blog! What's that about? Anyway, entered new info, so it's working - hooray!

First of all, wanted to thank everyone for making Willy DeVille's birthday show last week so much fun. I read all the emails from Berlin, Brazil, Switzerland, etc. Fascinating! Willy has such loyal fans all over the world! Also want to thank Martina & Gurrie - they are the founders of Willy's international fan club. They added my Friday's show, "Coffee and Cigarettes" to their "menu" for members to sign on to! The address is info@willydeville-minkdeville.com.....then scroll down the subjects and you'll see "Coffee and Sigarettes"! They do the spelling.

Today's show was a little "quieter", but always with good music including the "Refugee All Stars", Tom Waits, Markus James' "Calabash Blues", Eric Lindell from Alligator Records, Bob Dylan,

and for "Reel Talking" I talked about the Emmy Awards - my fave was Jeremy Piven who won for "Entourage" and my major disappointment was Michael Imperioli of "The Sopranos" for losing!....but wait his voice will be on "The Simpsons" this Sunday night! And between you and me, I loved Sandra Oh's dress with all the RunDMC stuff hanging around her neck. She's cool!

For films, saw "Little Miss Sunshine" ...not quite what I thought it was going to be; it was so chaotic at the beginning you want to stand up and scream, "OK! I got it!", but it finally calmed down to be a downright sad movie. Some funny moments with the VW bus and trying to get off the freeway to the hotel for the "Little Miss Sunshine" contest which, after looking at those little child contestants was CREEPY!! I don't know if it was a good movie.

*One more: "Dirty Linen" music magazine features a good interview with Willy DeVille! Look for the magazine and/or you can go online to their web site to order a back issue (August/September). My work is done here.

Have a great long, long weekend!
Sue

Lobby looking a bit different

Hello all!

Just wanted to let you know what's happening in office. I'm sure you've noticed we no longer have all that space in our lobby we once had. We are currently (yet slowly) moving our office out of the storefront space next door into lobby, basement and a storage unit. Our landlords are ready to revamp the office... like bringing in electricty and patching up the numerous places where the ceiling is falling down. They will be renting the space out after they are done and whether we decid to rent it or not has not been decided.

So we are trying to fit all the stuff we have accumulated in the space we have. I've been kind of enjoying this because we never really had a chance to organize anything ... we just stacked, stuffed, filed, etc., as we gathered and as needed. This has given us a chance to make the office easier to find things and also to see what we have to toss or keep.

New policy is being created due to this change. We've had a hard time keeping our computers up and running so we are asking no one to get on them. It doesn't take much to mess them up anymore, and since our computers are donated equipment, and we only have periodic help from our computer tech guy, we need to be extra careful on what is done on them. Even the one in booth caring our webstream is very important to keep virus or problem free. More and more our dj's are depending on that webstream for friends, family, musicians, collegues, etc. to be able to hear our station. There is an open DSL line in booth that you are all more then welcome to use with your laptop. It's hooked into the hub below window by forward promotion box.

There are many things that we once had secure that now are not. We don't have the luxury anymore of a whole different room that is locked at night to store stuff. Please help in keeping our office secure by locking door at 5:00 pm and keeping it locked. I'm sure you all have noticed that due to the wall from the cubicle it's hard to see out front door anymore if someone walks in.

Lots of changes always around here. We will try and keep you updated.

I like the new look though... it's cozy and friendly and with the blinds out front it's helped to keep it cooler in the office since our trees were cut down. Hope you all are enjoying it, too.

Thanks for ALL your volunteer work. We have created an important wonderful thing here and we just keep getting better and better. Yayyyyyy us!!!!
*smile
Marianne

Happy Birthday, Willy!

It's true - Willy DeVille has a birthday....on Friday, August 25 which means we can celebrate on "Coffee and Cigarettes" on Friday! I plan on airing his interview with KRBS while mixing in his wonderful music....sounds like a plan and sounds like a party! To send him your cards, notes and whatever: Willy DeVille International Fan Club, P.O. Box 40187, 8004 DD Zwolle, The Netherlands. He would enjoy hearing from all of you!
His fan club site is: info@willydeville-minkdeville.com Drop him an email wishing him a Happy Birthday. It is one of the best fan club sites I've seen. Gurrie & Martina run the club; they are doing an excellent job. They even put up info about "Coffee and Cigarettes" on KRBS! Cool. Thanks Gurrie & Martina! Willy is back from his highly successful European tour and is appearing at BBKing's Blues Club in New York on August 29 and in Boston at the Regatta Bar on August 31. So, tune in to KRBS on Friday, August 25 to listen to great Willy DeVille music including "Crow Jane Alley", "Live Concert in Berlin," "Victory Mixture" from New Orleans plus the classic "Jesse James" single! Good sounds that sound good.

And..."Reel Talking" will be on at 11:30am with Willy singing "Storybook Love" from the "Princess Bride" film. Have to thank Ashley for participating by telling us about "Me, You and Everyone We Know"...I ordered it on her recommendation....and loved sharing "Requium for a Dream" with Ashley's friend. To know that film is to love it...I was excited to find someone else who saw the film and felt the same way I did. Would like to encourage anyone and everyone out there to drop by the station to add your input about film & TV - please!

Speaking of TV, "Entourage" has me on the edge - have to see Vince as Joey Ramone on next week's show because, it's the last episode of the season - oh, no! "Lucky Louie" is sagging a bit. We need little Lucy to start off each episode. I watched a repeat episode of "The Sopranos".....whew! It is the best.

Okay.....your Friday morning is planned for you! Willy's birthday and be sure to drop him a card and/or email him at the above info!

Sue

Willy & the RumbleJetts!

What to expect for Friday's "Coffee and Cigarettes".....the playlist is bursting! Of course Willy DeVille (an interview with him in the recent (August/Sept) Dirty Linen Magazine - Hooray for the wild man! And I'm adding the RumbleJetts - they are amazing - so good, so much fun - my head cleared immediately while listening - no drugs! And the wonderful Salif Keita from his cd, "Moffou"....amazing music from Africa along with Markus James, and Eric Lindell "plus more surprises".

and for "Reel Talking"...well, as you know, I don't go see the mainstream movies (they're not "films") because the hype is out there, so you can decide if you want to see the flicks or not. Last Friday afternoon, it was warm outside, I made a glass of iced tea and just wanted to relax and "see a good movie"....how 'bout "Falling in Love" with Meryl Streep and DeNiro? Yesss! Wonderful old love story with new twists and great actors....then on to talking abouot a new film getting a lot of buzz, "Quinceanera" directed by Richard Glatzer & Wash Westmoreland. The title is a/k/a Echo Park (in L.A.) The film introduces a new 17 year old actress Emily Rios who plays the lead. Her directors and fellow cast members are impressed with her honesty...there was a lot of improvisation on her part plus her input to improve scenes that she knew weren't working.....and "Alice" and oldie with Mia Farrow directed by Woody Allen. Her character discovers an acupuncturist who changes her life when she finds herself torn between her life of luxury with a financially succesful husband, but meets a jazz musician. What's a girl to do???? Well, the acupuncturist is busily making up herbs for her (including one that makes her disappear so she can spy on everyone), and promises to make up a love potient for her to use on her husband......or her saxaphone player? Which one does she choose?
Great stuff, here!
Sunday nights are still good altho "Entourage" & "Lucky Louie" will be gone after 3 more episodes...boo-hoo....just when they were getting good! The Brotherhood is good and so is "Life on Mars"!
We'll talk!
Sue

Kidcage

Everyone is invited to come see my next play, James and the Giant Peach on Friday, August 11th at 7:30pm, Saturday, August 12th at 7:30pm, or Sunday, August 13th at 2:00pm. But I do have hot music to play on "Coffee and Cigarettes" on Friday, July 28....how 'bout Ziggy Marley (new cd), DeVille "Jesse James" & Dylan & Tom Waits...Eric Lindell...Markus James....I think we have a show from 10:00am until 11:30am! I will also play "The Refugee All Stars" again...Can't get enough; they are so good. You'll enjoy Ziggy Marley's new cd - a slight departure for him, but it's always good. I get calls when I don't play Eric Lindell, so stay tuned for sure!
For "Reel Talking" 11:30 - 12:noon....a new show on BBC on Monday nights - so good it's like a breath of fresh air (remember air?)"Life on Mars" starring John Simm and Philip Glenister. A clever story line - a take on retro police work, set in Manchester, England circa 1973. Includes fantasy elements ("Sam" is in a coma - wakes up- it's 1973 -he was 4 yrs old then, but he's an adult now....) He's embarrassed because he's wearing velvet bell bottoms, but he finds his old fave record store! Vinyl again and those great Peter Max posters....stay tuned - there's a job to be done here. "Entourage" The boys are happening, Turtle and Johnny Drama become Ari's new clients at last....."Lucky Louie" is the best comedy on TV. Nothing more to say. For films, I'll be talking about Bagdad Cafe -remember? It was released in 1988 - good film, then "Tsotsi", winner of the Best Foreign Language Film in 2005 - we'll talk...."Little Miss Sunshine" is the buzz right now and I'm waiting for "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and can't wait for "A Scanner Darkly"....
Sounds like fun...
Be Cool, Stay Cool
Sue

Book Review by Luscious LuLu

BOOK REVIEW:
Capers in the Churchyard: Animal Rights Advocacy in the Age of Terror
by Lee Hall with forward by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson

Often, books about animal rights are read only by those interested in supporting the cause. The task of spreading the word is monumental; how does an animal rights activist get the message out there without becoming a mere reflection of the abuse they are attempting to eliminate?

In the case of Capers in the Churchyard: Animal Rights Advocacy in the Age of Terror, Lee Hall has written a book specifically for the choir. This book is a must-read by those who have it in their hearts to seek a more effective means of educating the public in regards to animal rights.

“The point of a movement is to cultivate an alternative viewpoint,
one that takes hold, gains energy, and becomes plausible to enough
people to effect a paradigm shift.” (p. 73)

The peaceful message of promoting animal welfare is being lost in the current atmosphere of fear-based economics. Author Lee Hall asks those who believe in the original cause to pick up the torch and not use it to burn down the house.

Bricks through windows and vandalized fur coats only promote fear in the people we are trying to educate; thus, we continue feeding the beast of terror who claims to protect those we are trying to teach from the lesson we haven't yet learned ourselves.

“When violence and destruction has, for century after century,
been the tedious norm, non-violence is revolutionary.” (p. 20)

When I first became interested in the animal rights movement, my heroes were the people who put themselves on the front lines of “direct action”; activists who rescued animals from their laboratory cages, broke into factory farms and released the chickens, those who put themselves between the hunters and the hunted were my ideal. Being arrested for the cause was something of which to be proud and the battle scars were worn with pride.

As my belief system matured, I began to see “direct action”, as demonstrated by the militant activists of today, as detrimental to the true message of Animal Welfare.

“The prison system keeps growing as well, and one of its raw materials is the militant. Champions of intimidation are handing critiques, ready-made and gift wrapped, to the public and to the authorities.” (p. 73)

New laws have been passed that condemn animal activists to the rank of terrorist. By screaming our outrage, we are effectively silencing our voice. I can't help but think that those who ask us to threaten, intimidate, vandalize and terrorize in the name of any cause are, in truth, natural enemies of the cause.

Human Beings are animals and we're claiming our own right to live in a cruelty-free society.

“Other people are not the enemy of animals rights; if there is an enemy at all, it is the tendency to depersonalize others.” (p. 41)

But... how can we expect a civilization that can rape, torture, murder and experiment on its own kind to respect the rights of those over which we have claimed dominion?

That is the paradox.

We are living in the paradigm of fear-based economics. Setting aside those who torture and kill for the sheer sport of it (war-mongers, serial killers, and my cat), we can observe that the obsessive use of animals in our society brings in a profit for corporations who thrive on the fear of the consumer: the cosmetics industry (fear of growing old and dying alone), the defense industry (fear of those who might kill you in an attempt to promote their agenda), the food industry (fear of not getting enough nutrients and dying), the medical industry (fear of getting sick and dying). Sensing a theme?

How are we to teach peace in an age of war? How do we inspire love and respect in a world of fear and hate?

“Do activists seek a world in which respect prevails, in which love without coercion is possible? Do we see the life that grounds us, that supports us, that runs through our veins, that's connected with every tree, every animal, and do we promise never to harm anything connected with that great and delicate force?” (p. 37)

The golden thread that was originally sewn into the tapestry of the animals rights movement must be rewoven into the cloth. The mantra “by any means necessary” does not exclude peaceful and non-violent action. Truly, the only means necessary to inspire peace are those of peace.

Instead of crying “victory” when a day care center is forced to close its doors to the employees of an animal-testing laboratory because the safety of the children is threatened by those seeking to end the company's abuse of the animals, Lee Hall challenges us to step back, re-think our methods, and then change the world.

“Unraveling our hierarchies would be a revolution more profound than anything in our modern memory. It would mean giving up the human clubs of whiteness, of maleness, and even of humanness, kicking the habit of defining ourselves as possessors of dominion over all that fly, walk, swim, and crawl over the contours of a weary planet.” (p. 132)

This may be difficult.

This may mean a moment of inaction.

One moment to consider the direction of our first step in the journey of a thousand miles because

“There's work to do. Let's uncage ourselves.” (p. 138)

Willy and The Refugees All Stars

Hi, everyone.....
A few notes about "Coffee and Cigarettes" tomorrow (Friday) morning at 10:00-11:30am and "Reel Talking" (Friday) from 11:30 - 12:noon.

Last week, due to moving office space, KRBS' online connections were unplugged for a brief time and are now plugged back in, so I will make up for what online listeners missed on my show by playing more music by the "Refugee All Stars"; a beautiful African/Reggae band who sing about their struggle against a background of their lovely, uplifting music giving everyone a sense of hope, love and "have faith, this will get better." They also have a DVD, but it's difficult to find, so look for it -it has to be wonderful! They have been appearing in San Francisco, Grass Valley and at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
Willy (DeVille) is winding up his successful European tour to return to the States to play gigs in NYC and Boston. Great shows! I urge everyone to go to his fan site, "www.willydeville-minkdeville". The site is based in The Netherlands, run by Gurrie and Martina. They offer fans message boards to leave for each other to read, also fans are encouraged to submit pics they have taken of Willy and, lookout professional photographers, these pictures are beautiful! Also, a place to talk about other musicians, their music and likes & dislikes of everyone. A great global community.

Now, for "Reel Talking"....Can't ignore TV especially for "Entourage", "Lucky Louie" (I almost died laughing - starting to choke while laughing - I spared a 911 call, but I thought, "Well, maybe it's my destiny to go out this way"!?) Also "The Brotherhood" is lookin' good. It's on Showtime at 10:00 pm, ouch, this cuts into "Entourage", but Showtime always runs repeats during the week, or go to "On Demand".
Finally saw "The World's Fastest Indian" about Burt Monro from Australia who put together his Indian Motorcycle with old parts he could find to come to America to 1967 to race at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. This is a wonderful "small" film full of passion and honesty starring Anthony Hopkins. The best.
Also, watched "Syriana".....a little confusing until you "get it"....headlines focus on the big guys while the little companies are doing the wheeling and dealing,so you have to read between the lines. Excellent film that George Clooney co-produced and starred in. Also, "Next Stop Wonderland" with Hope Davis and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. A nice little film about relationships....again. And a comedy, "Keeping Up With the Steins" playing at the Pageant Theatre starring Jami Gertz, Daryl Hannah, Gary Marshall, Jeremy Piven (from "Entourage"), etc.
Any comments/question, email me: esoundcheck@aol.com or call the station 534-1200.
Thank you for listening so far!
Sue

DeVille and Lindell

For Friday, July 14 for "Coffee and Cigarettes a/k/a....and Rattlesnakes" and "Reel Talking" Hello! A few notes for my show(s) on July 14 Friday 10:00 am - 12:noon. Want to thank everyone for their comments, calls, emails, etc.

First of all, Willy DeVille's fans are reporting back that Mr. DeVille is having a blast on his tour in Europe; his voice is great and he's in terrific shape. Glad to hear it and hope a tour in the US will work out for him. "Keep those cards and letters coming"...here are a few current dates for him: July 15 Bluesfest Gamlitz, Austria July 22 Festival de Thau, Meze, France July 24 Blue Balls Festival Luzern, Switzerland July 17 Kuturbolaget Malmo, Sweden. Hooray, Willy - we're there in spirit for you.

....and Mr. Eric Lindell is workin' it: July 14 Chord on Blue St. Charles, Illinois, July 15 Beat Kitchen Chicago, Illinois, July 16 Cisco Systems Bluesfest, Ottowa, CAN and on August 2 AAA Radio Summit, Boulder Colorado. 3 nights of wonderful entertainment including Lindell, Jackson Brown, Ziggy Marley and Aimee Mann "& many many more." Sounds great.

On to "Reel Talking" Television: "Entourage" is living up to the high expectations everyone has for this show. The whole cast is terrific; Jeremy Piven is still in top form, Adriene Grenier hits the just right balance as do the rest of his entourage - class show. "Lucky Louie" is struggling....so darn funny - can't help but really enjoy it - a real laugh out loud show! But it's not slick, there is nudity but not by the ones you want! Great cast.

I will be talking about a "small" movie starring Adriene Grenier, "A Perfect Fit"....sorta good and I want to see "A Scanner Darkly" directed by Richard Linklater and starring Robert Downey Jr. & Woody Harrelson which tells you the plot right there with those two. The tech novelty does not wear off, but just the opposite; really plays into the movie - one to see. This is only Tuesday, so I'll have more films & TV to talk about - never fear!
Leave comments - thanks, Sue

For Friday, July 7 Willy & Pyeng

Hi everyone! Getting "Coffee and Cigarettes" together with "Reel Talking" for Friday, July 7. Pyeng Threadgill played the San Francisco Jazz Festival last week which generated a highly complimentary article in the San Francisco Chronicle on the girl "mixes jazz & blues with her own unique style"....I played her first cd, "Of the Air" on several past shows and really enjoy her. So, I'll be playiing her on Friday along with Mr. DeVille of course! Willy is playing to sold out audiences in Europe. Fans love him.

For "Reel Talking", I'll be mentioning the Emmy nominations which are always a mystery. Michael Imperioli is nominated for his work on "Sopranos" . He is phenominal...they should just give him the Emmy and close the curtains, but Drea De Matteo (Adrianna) is not nominated. If anyone remembers her last scene on the show, have we recovered yet? Also, I'll talk about "Brotherhood" which is a new show on Showtime - a "Sopranos" wanna-be, but does anyone understand it? I know the lead character has a long lost brother lurking out there in RI, so stay tuned. I did see "The Devil Wears Prada"...your enjoyment of this movie depends on what you bring to the table; your own experiences in the working world. "Nine Queens" sounds like fun - "The Criminal" with John C. Reilly is a re-make of "Nine Queens", so you know it's terrific. Also, "Stoned" about Brian Jones....and "Wassup Rockers" The exec producer is our own lovely Sharon Stone! Janice Dickinson has a minor role; listed as "Beverly Hills actress"....well, it's better than not!

Please listen (10:00 am - 12-noon) and any comments about the Emmy's, PLEASE let me know and "we'll talk"!
Stay tuned,
Sue

Willy & Markus

Still hot, hot, hot
Still hot news!
Willy DeVille will return to the USA with new new gigs! August 19*, Stony Pony in Asbury Park, NJ August 29, BB King's Blues Club NYC, August 31 Regattabar in Boston, Mass.
AND Markus James will be in NYC on August 12* at the Lincoln Center "Out-of-Doors" Series in NY and on September 9, the Sunnyvale Theatre in Sunnyvale, CA. Markus James is well known for his wonderful cds, "Nightbird" and the latest, "Calabash Blues" that he recorded in Africa with the legendary Ali Farka Toure including his great band of African musicians who play calabash, gourdes, stringed instruments to achieve the authentic, haunting blues. I marked Willy's date of August 19 & Markus' date of August 12 because these two fine musicians will be in the same 'hood on these dates - they should get together, don't you think? Exchange great ideas = great music.

Now that I have your summer planned, let's settle in to TV (for the "Reel Talking" show) Have to say, "Lucky Louie" is becoming the funniest & best show on TV - of course it's on HBO - they couldn't do all they do on Network TV - Gawd forbid! A couple of weeks ago I was disappointed in the show and wrote it off as being awful, but last Sunday's show was the best - the writing is superb - these people KNOW humor! Also, the audience is live - not canned - and it makes a huge difference. The actors are from "The Groundlings" and "Second City" school of comedy; very bright and improvisational. It's on HBO on Sunday nights at 10:30 pm (kids & in-laws should be in bed and asleep)

The above is a portion of what I'll be talking about on Friday. For movies, I'll be talking about Transamerica/The Adventures of Sebastion Cole & "The Devil Wears Prada" -the book and the movie.

Please add your thoughts/comments: esoundcheck@aol.com
Thanks!
Sue

Willy & Leon

Hot, hot, hot!
Hot news! Willy DeVille will be returning to NYC at BB King's Blues Club "An Evening with Willy "Mink" DeVille on August 29. He's in Europe right now playing to sold out audiences....having a great time. So, get your tickets now for the NYC gig - U.S. fans are purchasing their tickets now. Willy's a busy man and always gives a great show.

Also, Leon Russell will be appearing at the same club on November 19! Sunday Gospel Brunch will be happening in the afternoon.

My face is very red, not from a sunburn, but because I so highly recommended "Lucky Louie" on HBO on my show, "Reel Tallking" last Sunday - what was I thinking??? I said, "Okay, so it's a little crude, but funny!" Well, this last show was ALL crude and not funny. I kept thinking it will be the 21st century "All in the Family"....no! Go back to "King of Queens" it's funny in the classic l/2 hr sitcom tradition.
"Entourage" on HBO was alive and kicking. All took place in the San Fernando Valley, so those of you who lived in Reseda, survived it and are now living over the hill, will think this show was great and you were actually laughing out loud, but for those of you over 30 yrs old and STILL in the valley - depressing as hell!

Any questions/comments, email me at Esoundcheck@aol.com, I'll answer/discuss with you.
Stay tuned.....

Marley Mondays

Well needed publicity

Hiya all... a little heads up on some publicity coming our way.
Joe Krulder, great guy, who brought in the Charter High School kids to do the awesome but unfortunately short lived 'Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda show, and then took over the show himself for a period of time adding more politics and info on the amazing artists he played, has written an article for the CN&R that will be out next week (6-22-06). Thank you Ashley!
Thought I'd post a few things that are happening here at station.
First, we will be moving out of our office this coming month. The station stays in place, but will be a bit more crowded. We are going to need help with this so stay tuned for more information on that. We will be cleaning out basement at same time since we'lll have to put more stuff down there now. Time to lighten and organize our load a bit. We are looking for cheap or free storage space...if you hear about any let us know.
We are still working on the automation for 24/7 programming. It is a more complicated system then what we were using before and since the time available to work on this is limited it's been a bit slowmo. Also with the move now we have to rework some things to secure the computers. When this does happen it will make coverage so much more easier. yay!!!
If any of you out there want to take on the organizing of our Christmas Fair step up to the plate, we'll be needing to get cracking on this soon.
There is more but I will post little by little ... don't want to overwhelm. *smile
I am glad we have this to share information.

Minute-by-minute excitement on a Friday night

6:55 p.m. - Listening to the end of Democracy Now and getting my equipment set up. And typing this at the same time. You don't have to bow down before me, it's OK. I'll accept flowers and praise.

6:57 p.m. - More Democracy Now. As far as I know, everything is set up, but I need to rove the personals and get a clip ready.

6:59 p.m. - Once again DN ends with Amy Goodman cuts off another interview. Ah, the joys of things that never change.

7:03 p.m. - When playing music from a laptop, it is customary to actually remember to turn up the volume in an effort to share the music with the listeners. By the way, I now have my keyboard miked on the air.

*Mission Temple Fireworks Stand - Paul Thorn*

7:04 p.m. - Wow, I already have managed to get three high-fives on the night. This could be the sign of an epic record. Or a sign that I really need to keep my hands to myself.

7:07 p.m. - Yeah, technically I'm planning for the next piece before the song is over. I'm scouring the Internet for material as we speak and the News & Review.

7:10 p.m. It didn't play properly, so here is the link for you to peruse in your free time. Mr. Rogers

7:16 p.m. - First disclaimer of the night discouraging children from eating McDonald's after trying a segue to a song about racing and going on a tangent about 'Cars' and how Steve Jobs took away Disney toys from Happy Meals behind the scenes. And some idiot said Toy Story sucks.

*Black #3 - John Sines Jr.*

7:22 - 25 worst tech products

*Moskau - Dschinghis Khan*

7:32 - While this song is playing, I might as well mention that this is the intermission part of the show. Since we do not have actual commercials (because we can't have them) I use a long song in the middle of the hour to try to break up the amount of time I'm talking and to regroup. This song is aroun 8 min, which is about average for what I like to stick in here.

7:36 - High five count is now five on the night for remembering to post the name of the song and reading someone's mind.

7:40 - And to round out the night, a little discussion on blogging. Blog story

*20th Century Boy - Def Leppard*

Left Turn on Bird Street to make pit stop

Hi All! Tom and I are taking a short exit from LToBS. Tom has a short term transporation jam and I have several family obligations that will keep me busy this summer. Our show had been airing alternating Saturdays from 9-11am. Hopefully our slot will still be available later this summer so we can return. Dan

England Rocks

Hello, My name is Kelly Sanders and I have the late Weds night show called England Rocks. I will be changing the name of my show very soon, to open things up to bands from all over the world. I started my show playing classic rock from English bands, and now I'm playing new music from bands from the UK as well as other countries of the world. I'm also the singer of the band Jolly Roger who will be releasing our first CD in the couple months on Lucky Bones Records. Here is our web site address , be sure to check out the KRBS page. www.JollyRogerRocks.com

First blog

The first blog.

Well this is a fun little project we have going on. This is a blog community for Radio Bird Street DJs to keep in touch and stay updated. With Blogger you can make a couple other blogs and we suggest you make one for your show. You can use your show blog to show playlists, pictures, talk about music or whatever you want. Now I've misinformed a few of you by saying the you can't share owner privallages but it seems you can. So for those with co-hosts, you can both share the blog equally.

If you have any problems getting started and you want more of a walk through then stop by the station on Fridays and I can help you out.
-Ashley
